MEET OUR ADOPTABLE GRIFFS

The sweet Griffs shown here do not necessarily represent all who will be available. The nature of our rescue operation means that we must always be on the alert to bring animals in need into our program. All must be vetted and cared for in a foster home, where we give them any treatments necessary and explore their personalities. Your future fur-baby may be in the queue. Your application will allow us to make the right match.

MEET CASSIDY & JESSIE!
#3715 & #3716

Meet Cassidy (M) and Jessie (F) a brother and sister bonded pair of “grande” griffs who came to NBGR via a breeder surrender.  Cassidy weighs in around 19 lbs. and Jessie is around 18 lbs.  They are big but there’s just more of them to love!  C&J have just turned 8 years old.

These two are real sweethearts.  They are pretty good on the housebreaking in general although they don’t like going out in the rain and have been known to have accidents on rainy days.  They are good eaters and probably could learn some tricks as they do love their treats!  They get along great with other dogs and even like kids.

Cassidy and Jessie sleep in the big bed with their foster parents.  They are good in the car and on walks – although Cassidy is missing part of one of his paws (we were told since birth) so he can be a little slow at times – but his foster mom says he is a trooper.

These two thrive on love and attention and they really enjoy time out in the big yard.  These guys will be a great addition to any family – maybe yours?

Jessie had her teeth cleaned recently – Cassidy’s teeth are good.  Both are up-to-date on vaccines, on heart worm preventative, spayed/neutered, and microchipped.   If you are interested in adopting Cassidy and Jesse please complete our adoption application on line at nbgr.org.  If you have already completed an application please contact Vicki at vboneill@optonline.net to let her know you are interested in C&J.  Cassidy and Jessie are being fostered in Levittown, PA.

MEET BIBI!
#3850

Bibi is a super sweet girl who came in to rescue because her owner had health issues and could no longer care for her. Bibi is about 6 years old and weighs in at 12 lbs. She is a little bit shy and submissive when she first meets you but once she knows you she is a cuddly, snuggly girl who just wants to be with you all the time. Bibi gets along well with the other dogs in her foster home.

Bibi is fairly well housebroken – she has been pee pad trained but will go outside mostly when she is taken out on a regular schedule – only using the pee pads when her foster family is out. She is learning to walk on a leash – although she is sometimes nervous and lies down – but with encouragement she will get going again.
We think that the perfect home for Bibi would be a home with a fenced yard and someone who works from home and another small dog for her to play with and chill with. She can be very playful – loves all the squeaky toys the best.

Bibi’s foster mom says she is a spectacular girl who only wants your love and attention.

If you are interested in adopting Bibi, please complete our adoption application at NBGR.org. If you already have an application on file please let Vicki know you are interested in Bibi by emailing vboneill@optonline.net. We prefer to place our dogs within a reasonable driving distance from where they are being fostered. Bibi is being fostered in Rockford, TN.

MEET MAJOR!
#3860

Meet Major 3860 who came to NBGR as an owner surrender. Major is a 5 year old chocolate smooth (we know it isn’t a standard griff color but he could not be more griffy looking!) Major currently weighs 13.9 lbs and is a charming little guy with a gentle heart. He is a marker so far but we are hoping that being neutered will help curb that inclination. He doesn’t mind wearing a belly band in any case. He has never pooped in the house so it seems to be a marking issue only. He goes crazy if he is crated for the night or if he is crated when his foster mom is going out. We believe that he was not crated in his previous home but may have been confined to a pen with a couple of other dogs now and then.

But now for the good stuff. Major’s foster mom has been with NBGR for many years and has fostered many dogs. She says that without a doubt this boy is the sweetest, cuddliest foster she has ever had. He never barks – even when her other dogs get in an uproar. He gets along with the other dogs in a variety of sizes and has no issues with the cat who will groom him from time to time. Major needs a person who will be around a lot of the time so he wants a work from home person or a retired person – someone who wants him with them all the time – or maybe on them all the time! He is not leash trained so he will need a fenced yard and he would love another dog to chill out with also. He sleeps in the big bed and is a good sleeper (although he does snore so sweetly!) With the right person who’s home often and ready to shower him with love, Major will be the most loyal, loving companion you could ask for.

Major is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, heartworm negative and microchipped. If you are interested in adopting Major, please fill out an application at nbgr.org. If you have an application on file and you are interested in Major – please email Vicki at vboneill@optonline.net to let her know. We like to place dogs within a reasonable driving distance of their foster homes whenever possible. Major is being fostered in Modesto, CA.

  MEET DIDLEY & NIEVE!
#3840 & 3841

Didley 3840 is a super sweet but slightly shy 10 year old black smooth griff who came in to rescue as a breeder surrender along with his BFF Nieve 3841.   Once Didley is comfortable and gets over his shyness then he is ready for cuddles and kisses.  Nieve is a 9 year old black rough griff who loves cuddles and kisses too – but she also loves exploring and is on the move and keeping up with everything that goes on in her foster home and the yard!

When Didley came to NBGR his teeth were in pretty bad shape so he had a major dental done and the teeth he had left were removed. He felt so much better after that was done and he healed well – and it doesn’t slow him down on eating.  Nieve’s teeth were also in bad shape so she had a dental and she did lose all the teeth she had left – and she isn’t troubled by her lack of teeth either. Nieve and Didley are  crate trained and will sometimes go in to a crate during the day for a nap together. Nieve is working on learning leash training but it’s a work in progress so she would like a fenced yard – and Didley agrees.  Didley hates being leashed – we think he feels like he is being punished and he just lies down when his leash is on. His knees cause him to be a bit weak in the rear but as he has exercised walking around in his foster home he’s gotten stronger in the rear.

Didley has been doing really well on his housebreaking – almost never makes a mistake – although he may regress a little when he goes to his new home. Nieve is also very good on housebreaking – as long as they are taken out on a regular schedule.  Nieve and Didley are quite small and will not be placed in a home with young children.

Didley is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and heartworm negative. He takes heartworm preventative. Didley weighs in at just under 9 lbs.  Nieve is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and heartworm negative. She takes heartworm preventative. Nieve weighs in at just under 9 lbs.

If you are interested in Nieve and Didley please complete our adoption application. If you already have an application on file please contact Vicki at vboneill@optonline.net to let her know you are interested in our adorable pair. Didley and Nieve are being fostered in Tuscumbia, AL. We prefer to place our dogs within a reasonable driving distance whenever possible.

MEET RED!
#3869

NBGR has three lovely puppies from and OOPS! litter to place. Their Mom is a very sweet Coton de Tulear and their Dad is a charming (and still quite puppyish himself!) Brussels Griffon. Mom is 15.5 lbs. and Dad is 12 lbs. The puppies have grown up with their Mom, their Dad and the mom’s littermate – who has taught them the importance of respecting another dog’s space.

The owners have poured their hearts into giving these little ones the best start in life. They have all their baby records, introduced them to Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), and made sure they had plenty of visitors, including children. They even took them on safe field trips to get them used to new environments. As a result, they love the vet and everyone they meet! (Aren’t they lucky that the owner’s daughter is a dog trainer so has helped to get these pups off to a great start!)

With so much going on, alone training has been the biggest challenge. But they’re making progress with brief kennel sessions, learning to walk on a leash, and mastering basic manners and obedience. They’re also doing well with pee pad potty training, though occasional accidents are to be expected (they are puppies, after all!).

Red 3869 is a handsome reddish brown male puppy with a unique coat featuring black accents and creamy highlights. He may even lighten up more as he grows!

This little rascal is full of energy and loves to explore! He’s very affectionate, but only for short bursts – there’s just too much to see and do! Red enjoys his pocket carrier but would much rather be out and about, walking on his own four paws. He’s going to make a fantastic hiking buddy for an active adopter!

Red has a curious mind and needs plenty of engaging activities to keep him happy and out of trouble. He’s working on basic commands like “Sit,” potty training with pee pads, and learning to be comfortable alone.

This busy boy is a snuggle bug when he’s tired out, and with some patience and training (mastering his “on/off switch”!), he’ll be a cuddly house marshmallow. Red would thrive with activities like Doggy Zen, nose work, and plenty of structured playtime outdoors.

Red was born on 10/18/24. His weight at around 14 weeks was 7.2 lbs. He looks more like his Mom than his dad but has more of his Dad’s coloring.

If you are interested in adopting Red please fill out our adoption application at nbgr.org. If you already have an application on file contact Vicki at vboneill@optonline.net. Red is in Massachusetts.

PAWS OF WINTER

In the ‘winter’ of their lives, older Brussels Griffons need care and security. Loving homes provide the dignity and quality of life each deserves. Because each one is precious. SM

We are committed to senior and special-needs Griffs
Over time, NBGR has taken in an increasing number of senior and special-needs dogs. Whether they have been abandoned by uncaring owners or puppy mill operators who don’t need them when their breeding days are over — or they have been surrendered by heartbroken owners who can no longer care for them — we take them in.

Like us, dogs require increasing medical attention in their senior years; and like us, their medical expenses can soar. The largest expense in the NBGR budget is, by far, the Paws of WinterSM program.

These sweet seniors and special-needs dogs still have a lot of life — to enjoy, to share with us. It simply costs more to sustain and protect them and their quality of life. We are committed to making that happen for them.

If you agree, please help.

If you can you help with a donation…Thank goodness for you. Your support keeps us from having to turn away a senior or special-needs dog.

We call these dogs our “Forever Fosters”. They are not adoptable, and a change in their environment could affect them negatively, so we have settled them into special foster homes. Their foster families will care for them for the rest of their days, and NBGR will pay all their expenses.

MEET MOJITO!
#3123

Meet Mojito or Moe as his friends call him. Moe was adopted from NBGR in 2014 by a lovely couple that gave him a great life.  Unfortunately, he lost his dad this year and mom has had some health issues which made it harder to give Moe the attention he needed in his latter years. Enter Moe’s original foster mom. She’d always loved Moe and kept up with him all these years. She was all too happy at a chance to take Moe back in and make sure he had everything he needed. We estimate Moe to be around 17 years old now and he is loving life. He is as happy as a clam hanging out with his Mom, some sibs, and even a few goats! Moe appears to be blind and deaf but doesn’t let that stop him from licking all his siblings’ bowls just in case a tidbit was left behind. His nose works just fine thank you very much! After mealtimes, he is known to find his favorite bed and drag it around to make sure he is the closest to his Mom.

NBGR so very much appreciates our fosters who are willing to take in an older dog or one with special needs. Moe is a special little man who is now able to live out his life in comfort thanks to his forever foster family! Read More A dog with its head under the covers

GUSTAF

MEET GUSTAF!
#5309

A note about Gus from his forever foster family.

Meet handsome Gustaf (Gus), our special needs foster. Gus is part of the NBGR Paws of Winter program. He is energetic, playful, and often ornery. He loves his daily walks and considers the few blocks around home his territory. When not walking, the next best activity is a lively game of tug with any fabric toy. After the games are over, it’s time to snuggle on the couch with his foster mom.

Gus was born with a deformed heart. A cardiologist felt he only had one year to live after NBGR got him in – but that was in May 2018 when he was almost one year old! However, Gus doesn’t care what the doctor said. He had clearly outlived that expectation! You would never know the little guy has a heart condition. In fact, he is one of the “busiest” dogs his family can remember. In reality we know he isn’t completely normal for his age as he does tire out more quickly and he doesn’t tolerate heat well – but when he’s on – he’s ON full blast! He sees his cardiologist only once a year now and he’s been getting pretty good reports!

Many of the NBGR dogs have a few strikes against them in their lives. But with love and care, they make the best of each day. When you open your heart to rescue a dog, you will see that they make our days better too.

We are very thankful to Gus’s foster family – it’s hard to take on a young guy who you know will not live as long as he should.

MEET PIXIE SUE!
#3804

Pixie Sue (3804) came to NBGR at almost 16 years of age after her owner was going to a nursing home and she was going to have Pixie Sue euthanized. Pixie was in really rough shape when we got her. So rough, we weren’t sure if she was going to make it even a day or two. She wouldn’t stop coughing, hacking and panting and seemed to be in distress, so we took her to the Vet immediately to see if she indeed needed to be put down, or if her issues were treatable. They took x-rays, blood work, and did a thorough exam. She was found to have an extremely enlarged heart, a restricted trachea due to her enlarged heart, crackling in her right lung, fluid on her lung and heart, a mass of some kind at the base of her heart and possibly an ulcer, but the Vet did feel that her health issues were treatable and may improve if treated. Pixie was put on several medications for her heart, her lungs, the fluid, the ulcer, her coughing, an antibiotic and another med to try to keep her relaxed. After a week of cautiously observing her to see if the medications were going to help this sweet senior girl, she indeed had shown substantial improvement. Not only did her cough, hacking and panting subside quite a bit, her sassy, spry self, came shining through again. To look at her now, you would not have guessed she will be 16 years old in a couple of weeks, or that she has all of the health issues that she has. This sweet, sassy girl is living her best life now, for whatever remaining life she may have left. However, she will be on expensive medications for the rest of her life, as well as continued Vet visits. Pixie Sue (3804) is part of NBGR’s Paws of Winter program and is not available for adoption. If you would like to contribute to Pixie Sue’s expenses please make a donation to our Paws of Winter program. Thank you!

MIKEY

MEET MIKEY!
#3438

Mikey is a strikingly handsome, very psychologically damaged senior. This poor boy came to us from a horrific life in a Mississippi puppy mill in February of 2016 along with Kiko and the mother-daughter duo of Trixie & Lexi.

All 4 came to us heart worm positive requiring expensive medical treatment to eradicate this life threatening condition, along with multiple traumatic PTSD and fear based temperament/behavior issues derived from years of neglect and abuse at the puppy mill.

Only Kiko progressed far enough overcoming these issues to be deemed appropriate for an adoptive home placement. Sadly, he passed away one year after being adopted due to pulmonary issues secondary to living most of his life heart worm positive.

Unfortunately, Trixie also succumbed from similar pulmonary issues secondary to being heart worm positive most of her life. Poor little Lexi grieved for quite some time after losing her mother.

Mikey has remained healthy, but will remain in forever foster care because, like Lexi, any change to his current living environment could affect Mikey very negatively.

Although Mikey has finally grown to feel secure and loved in his foster home, and enjoys the camaraderie of his foster siblings along with snuggles with his foster mom, he remains extremely fearful of men, children, strangers, loud noises, car rides, is a very adept escape artist, and cannot go on walks because he will attempt to bolt and run if strangers approach despite ongoing intense positive reinforcement training.

Luckily, Mikey’s foster family loves him despite his struggles, and have agreed to care for him in their home for the rest of his life where he feels most comfortable, safe, and most of all cherished despite his tragic psychological damage.

MEET WINKY!
#3787

This little lady was picked up as a stray by Polk County Animal Services in Sebring, FL, in January 2024. When no one came forward to claim her, the Humane Society of Highlands County, FL, pulled her from the shelter, setting her on a path to NBGR and a new life.   Winky is tight lipped about her age, but the vet guesstimates her to be around 12-13 years old. She is missing an eye, has almost no vision in her remaining eye, and is completely deaf. When found, she was in desperate need of veterinary care and an extreme makeover due to neglect. A thorough examination, bloodwork, and echocardiogram uncovered a multitude health concerns consistent with a dog of her age, but nothing life threatening.   Winky is very independent and aloof. She likes to always be near her foster parents, but does not like to cuddle, sit on your lap (or even near you on the couch), sleep in the big bed, play, or engage in any activities other than eating and treating. But bring out a treat or a chew and she gets downright perky! Occasionally, she’ll even wag her tail. Those are the moments that fill our hearts with joy.

Thank you for choosing to make a difference through your donations. With your contributions, we are able to aid dogs like Winky (who are disunited from their families through no fault of their own) continue to live out their best lives.

MORTY

MEET MORTY !
#3547

Little Morty 3547 came to NBGR from Highlands Humane in Sebring FL who pulled him from the County Animal Shelter where he had spent 6 weeks after he was confiscated from his owner before he could be released to rescue.  Highlands contacted us as soon as they had him and our coordinator picked him up from them in March 2019.

This little fellow was in pretty bad shape.  His eyes were a mess (he is blind in one eye.)  His skin was pretty bad.  The vet said he was between 10-11 years old and he was not yet neutered – and tiny at just 7 lbs.  We were not sure how long he would be with us – he was a delicate little guy.

One he was able to be neutered he moved on to a foster home.  We were a little nervous as we were not sure how he would do as there were two young sons in his foster home – but they had a lot of experience with a small senior family dog who had passed on recently – so we gave it a try and hoped that Morty had found his Paws of Winter forever foster home.

Here we are 4.5 years later and Morty is still doing very well.  He made it through the pandemic and he even had his teeth cleaned this past summer!  He has had a number of pretty hefty medical challenges but he is like the energizer bunny – he just keeps on going! His biggest ongoing challenge is caring for his good eye – and his foster mom administers drops to his eye daily.   Morty is a happy boy who is lovingly cared for by his foster family.  He travels with his family and occasionally hangs out with the in-laws on vacations.  We are so thankful for our long term foster families – without them we would not be able to care for these wonderful senior griffs who absolutely deserve wonderful places to live out their lives.

BIRDIE

MEET BIRDIE!
#3740

Birdie is a senior female that came to NBGR from a commercial breeding facility in April 2023. She is 12 years old and about 14 lbs. She is a very timid girl who is still learning to fit into life with humans. She spent her life before NBGR producing puppies.

She is now a healthy girl who has gained a clean bill of health along with some weight. She was malnourished when she arrived and it showed in her body and teeth. Unfortunately, none of her teeth could be saved. The removal of her teeth has caused her to feel better and be able to eat better as she is pain free.

She is incredibly sweet after she starts trusting you, but is still very submissive and will crouch and roll on her back if you approach her too quickly. Birdie’s Foster mom won her heart by singing to her all the time and she recommends you do the same. Birdie will love you dearly. Birdie has also taken a great delight in tasting new foods and finds it very exciting! She enjoys barking at the dust buster and will let you know all about it.

She currently likes playing with soft toys with her two year old Affenpinscher friend. They also will pal around and gently play together. Birdie loves being petted and brushed and awards you with kisses on the hand.

Birdie has a fear of all men but she has been in her foster home a year she and her foster dad are beginning to have a relationship. She is not housetrained. She wears diapers inside and loves running with the pack to go potty outside. She will still use the diaper even when going out on regular intervals. She may never be housetrained.

Birdie is precious, sweet, and so much wants to be loved. She has a gentle, patient, and understanding Mama. There is nothing more rewarding than watching a dog that came from such hardship grow, change, and learn to love and trust.

POPPY & BOB

MEET POPPY & BOB!
#3742 & 3743

Poppy and Bob came to NBGR from a commercial breeding facility in April 2023. Poppy is extremely dependent on Bob. She is a very shy little 9 year old girl who spent her life prior to April producing puppies. Bob is her security blanket! Poppy was heartworm positive. At the time we took her in she wasn’t in great shape so we opted for the slow-kill method to cure the heartworms. We are very happy to report that Poppy is now heartworm negative Poppy was spayed and had a dental performed in May 2023. She is clearly feeling much better and has come out of her shell. She is 10-11 lbs. She loves her foster mom and tolerates her foster dad as long as he moves slowly.

Bob is a bigger and more confident dog He weighs about 19 lbs. Bob got neutered and had a dental in May 2023. His teeth were pretty rotten and many were missing – and now he only has one tooth left! In Bob’s case the missing teeth are a good thing. Bob would love to lay next to you on the couch and let you pet him all day. He can’t jump on the couch by himself – has some arthritis in his back – but he can go up steps and he takes joint supplements to help his back.

Bob and Poppy were up for adoption for almost a year. These two sweet dogs need someone who has a lot of patience and is kind. Someone who will cut them slack because they spent all their lives in wire cages as breeders and they are just learning that life is better than it used to be. Dogs with this kind of background have little breakthroughs and become more adapted to their new lives very slowly – but loving them is very rewarding. Bob had a crisis recently and underwent a major trachea surgery and is recovering beautifully. His foster mom reports that he is just the happiest guy ever! He is truly loving his life. His foster parents have now become his forever parents as he and Poppy have joined our Paws of Winter program. Congrats to Bob and Poppy!

MEET FRANNIE!
#3749

Meet our sweet Paws of Winter senior Frannie 3749 (aka Grannie Frannie, aka Grannie Frannie Puddin’ Pie!).

Frannie came into rescue about a year ago after finding herself in a shelter. Despite being blind, deaf, and finding herself homeless at the 10+ years of age, for the last year Frannie starts each new day with a positive outlook and a healthy appetite for life. She enjoys sleeping/recharging her batteries, eating, smelling the fresh outdoor breezes, stroller rides and controlled walks, exploring her yard (supervised due to her lack of sight), being brushed and massaged/petted.

Frannie not only came into rescue blind and deaf but with slight neurological disconnect/gait issues and head tilt, sensitivity symptoms to touch with rear end and mammary tumors that had to be removed.

Frannie has skin allergy issues/flare ups (seasonal/food?). She requires on going veterinary care for her eyes and her skin. Frannie also is receiving spinal adjustments to assist her mobility.

Frannie requires eye cleaning/medications 2-3 different prescriptions (depending on the day) administered twice daily to each eye and allergy medication. These medications/supplements are a life long commitment and they are lovingly administered by her amazing Paws of Winter foster parents. With all that Frannie has against her medically she is now in a place where she can enjoy the Winter of her life knowing she is loved and cared for and will never again be in a shelter.

Thank you for choosing to make a difference through your donations. With your contributions, we are able to aid dogs like Frannie (who are disunited from their families through no fault of their own) continue to live out their best lives.
